Connect these two pictures.

AnsPlimsoll shoe is named so – because the coloured horizontal band which joins the sole to the upper part of the shoe looks like the plimsoll line found on ships. This was cracked by many.

The shoe acquired the nickname ‘plimsoll’ in the 1870s because the colored horizontal band joining the upper to the sole resembled the Plimsoll line on a ship’s hull, or because, just like the Plimsoll line on a ship, if water got above the line of the rubber sole, the wearer would get wet.

  8. Plimsoll. 1st pic is a “Plimsoll shoe”. The 2nd pic shows the “Plimsoll line” on the side of ships which indicate the max weight to which ships can be loaded. As long as the line is above the sea level, the the loaded weight on the ship/boat is within legal/design limits.
